Who are the customers of the French rail network?

SNCF Réseau has around fifty customers: passenger and freight railway undertakings and transport operators, including shippers and manufacturers. In addition, there are the mobility organising authorities.

A network customer is a transport company, an organisation that can order train paths (such as a port) or an organising authority that develops a public transport service on the network. Our customers are project people. They run freight or passenger trains on the French rail network: 

  •  according to a transport plan defined with the mobility organising authorities, for so-called "contracted" services 
  •  by calling on the infrastructure manager directly, for freely organised services. 

Where can they go with us? 

Our customers can transport passengers and goods to the heart of the French regions and throughout Europe, via cross-border lines and freight corridors.

The Customer Commitment initiative, launched in 2022, is a continuation of the satisfaction barometer in which you express your expectations in six key areas every year.

We guarantee you fair access to the network

It's an obligation we feel strongly about. We act with complete transparency and a constant concern for non-discrimination, in order to offer all our customers fair access to the network. What are the unique conditions for this access? We have included them in our Network Reference Document. Who checks that they are applied? The Transport Regulation Authority (Autorité de Régulation des Transports or ART) is responsible for enforcement. And we have also adopted a code of good conduct in terms of fares and capacity allocation.

By providing effective support for our customers' transport projects, we are contributing to the development of the rail industry. By developing the rail industry, we are responding to the need to decarbonise the transport sector. By decarbonising transport, we are taking concrete action against global warming. Thanks to our customers, we are making progress towards a more sustainable society. 

Building an accessible network together

This is a priority that we share with our customers: making the network accessible everywhere and for everyone. Making stations and platforms accessible, adapting trains, setting up support services for people with disabilities and reduced mobility, etc. Enormous progress has been made over the last fifteen years. These initiatives, coordinated by SNCF Réseau since 2020, are being carried out in collaboration with all the railway undertakings. Accessibility is everyone's business!
