Safety and security on the rail network

The prerequisite for all our actions

Without safety, all our ambitions for the network and its users would be in vain. Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of the public, property, traffic and infrastructure throughout the rail network.

Our ambition? To reduce to zero the number of accidents in stations, on tracks, at level crossings and on railway sites.

Zero accident target

Although the annual number of accidents on the railways has been falling steadily since 2020, the accident figures show that we still need to be even more vigilant.
  • 147

significant accidents on the national rail network in 2024

  • 10,000

trespassing incidents on railway lines observed on average each year

  • 100

collisions at level crossings on average each year

A comprehensive and integrated safety culture

Rail operating safety, fire and environmental risks, natural and technological risks, security of goods and people, health and safety at work, cyber security... we prevent all safety risks in a comprehensive way.

All involved, all responsible

Our teams are both the beneficiaries and the actors of safety: everyone at their level is involved and takes into account the risks associated with these different areas of safety. Through their behavioural and technical skills, managers, agents and service providers play a positive role in this continuous improvement process.

Approved by the EPSF

In 2021, our safety approval was renewed for five years by the Établissement public de sécurité ferroviaire. Without this precious door opener, trains cannot run! This recognition confirms our ability to meet regulatory safety requirements and manage risks.

Our safety commitments

Our actions focus on securing the network and raising public awareness.
  • Production safety

Guaranteeing our production in complete safety

  • Safety of traffic

Providing a safe rail network for transport operators

  • Infrastructure security

Ensuring the resilience of the network to climatic hazards or malicious acts

  • Zero accidents

Reducing accidents involving passengers, staff, the public and third parties

Securing the network

At the heart of our missions and expertise, in all our activities and at every point on the network, we act to ensure the safety of passengers, our customers, our staff and all members of the public on or near railway rights-of-way.

  • We monitor, maintain and renew the network to ensure optimum safety for all our infrastructure.
  • We do everything possible to ensure the safety of traffic on the national rail network: operational centres, monitoring technologies, prevention of bad weather, etc.
  • Thousands of employees and service providers work night and day, all year round, on the railways. Safety on sites is one of our priorities.
  • With the rail reform of 2020, the unified management of passenger stations was entrusted to SNCF Gares & Connexions. SNCF Réseau has also delegated station security to it.

Prevention is everyone's business

As the infrastructure manager of the national rail network, we have a duty to raise awareness of the risks inherent in railway activity, in order to combat dangerous behaviour.

We run prevention campaigns on:

  • risks in stations
  • risks at level crossings
  • risks on railway rights-of-way

Rail security: multiple resources on the ground

Under SNCF Réseau contract, the railway security teams advise and protect not only train users, but also our staff, assets and activities. They also intervene on railway property (intrusions, thefts from sites, malicious acts, etc.).
