Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Preparing for the mobility of the future

In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, SNCF Réseau is continuing its actions to improve coverage of the region to encourage a modal shift from road to rail and thus meet the region's sustainable mobility needs. The programme includes maintaining and modernising the network, improving the service offering and developing rail infrastructure.

Serving customers and the regions

By its very nature, our business is firmly rooted in the areas crossed by the rail network. In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, as throughout France, we work on a daily basis with many local players to maintain, modernise, develop and operate the regional network.

The network in the region

More than 50% of the network in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region is made up of lines providing comprehensive coverage of the region, accounting for half of TER services and a third of passengers. The core network accounts for the other half of TER services and two-thirds of passenger traffic. The Poitou-Charentes area is connected to the high-speed line network (Poitiers/Angoulême and service of La Rochelle), and the Saintes hub, in its centre, connects the various places where people live. Services in the Limousin are structured around the Limoges hub, serving the less densely populated areas of the region. The former Aquitaine network is characterised by strong suburbanisation around the Bordeaux rail hub, in the Dax-Bayonne-Hendaye sector, around Pau and on the routes: Bordeaux-Agen, Bordeaux-Pau-Lourdes, etc.

Our network is evolving

Our aim is to respond to the major social and environmental challenges, and to meet the new demands for mobility. We are working with the public authorities on structural projects designed to adapt the network to growing passenger and goods flows, such as the major Sud-Ouest rail project and the rail developments to the south of Bordeaux, as well as the RER. We are also carrying out modernisation works on the existing network to optimise its operation, improve service quality and maintain a high level of service regularity and punctuality. All these projects are carried out in conjunction with stakeholders, in a spirit of openness and dialogue.
