Understanding the French rail network

A network that thinks big

The French rail network is the second largest in Europe. To meet the dual challenge of decarbonising transport and meeting the growing need for mobility, we are preparing it to accommodate twice as many passenger and freight trains in the next 10 to 15 years.

Our starting point: a historic network

With 28,000 km of lines running through almost 8,800 municipalities, the French rail network forms a powerful territorial network that carries 5 million passengers and 300,000 tonnes of freight every day. A huge part of France's historical heritage, the network bears witness to more than 120 years of technological development. It mobilises tens of thousands of agents who ensure its performance to offer the best quality of service to our customers.

Our finishing line: a sustainable network

We are working with the entire French and European rail ecosystem to design the network of the future: a high-performance, resilient network capable of meeting new mobility needs and helping to decarbonise transport. This is reflected in major projects to develop the transport offer in the regions, metropolitan regional express services that make daily journeys easier for as many people as possible, a modal shift towards rail freight encouraged and the introduction of European rail interoperability. And all this will be made possible by speeding up the regeneration and modernisation of the network - our absolute priority!

Our method: dialogue with the regions

We have always been in dialogue with public authorities, the regions and our customers. We listen to their needs and put our expertise at their service. As the network architect, we have an overall vision of the railway system that enables us to ensure the coherence and robustness of future developments. But it is together that we can design the best mobility offer for the benefit of all.

Focus on works

Today, most of the projects and worksites we are working on are focused on the regeneration of tracks and catenaries, the modernisation of signalling systems, making stations more accessible, etc., in addition to the very large projects that are accelerating the development of the network.

Our 3 imperatives

Safety

Our safety culture is global and integrated, always with the same objective: to achieve "zero accidents" across the entire network.

Safety for all

Service quality

Trains that arrive on time, ever faster and more reliable passenger information: this is a constant requirement for our operations teams.

Resilience

Storms, extreme heat, extreme cold, etc. we are taking action to anticipate and limit the impact of increasingly violent climatic hazards on the components of the rail network.

Managing climatic hazards

Digitisation, a lever for our performance

We are harnessing the power of new technologies to modernise the network.

Digital solutions are deployed to assist our teams in their missions. Monitoring tools therefore provide us with real-time data on the condition and performance of infrastructures, enabling us to move towards predictive maintenance. The computerisation of signal boxes and the centralisation of traffic management mean that traffic can be maximised in complete safety and regularity.

Our responsibility: to limit our environmental footprint

As a player in the ecological transition, we are committed to a responsible approach that aims to limit the environmental impact of our activities. Action is being taken to preserve biodiversity in the vicinity of our rights of way, encourage the recycling of track materials and reduce rail noise.
