Sustainable development: leading the way

Our ambition

We are committed to leading the way for the mobility of the future, in every region, for the benefit of our customers and their customers. With 28,000 km of lines crossing nearly 10,000 municipalities and 3,000 stations managed by our subsidiary SNCF Gares & Connexions, we are a major player in rail mobility, but also a unique network of expertise, energy and talent throughout France!

The train, responsible and sustainable transport by nature

It cannot be repeated often enough: because it is greener, safer, suited to new forms of mobility and a vehicle for development, rail is the most sustainable and appropriate response to the challenges of mass mobility for passengers and goods. This reference document will help you learn about the advantages of rail transport in more detail.

Creating value for our customers and stakeholders

By increasing the proportion of passenger and goods transportation carried by rail, we are contributing to the development of the least polluting form of mass transport. To succeed in this mission, we need to be constantly listening, proactive, agile and in dialogue with our customers and all our stakeholders in all fairness. Together, we are helping to develop the most environmentally-friendly, safest and most accessible mass transport solution.

Ensuring the safety and security of all

The safety and security of everyone is a prerequisite for everything we do. One target objective: to reduce to zero the number of accidents on the tracks, in stations, at level crossings and in our workplaces. But also protect ourselves against natural and technological hazards, as well as cyber attacks.

Improving our social performance

We are constantly striving to improve our social performance. Why? Because people are at the heart of all our projects. For them, we are banking on diversity, encouraging all talents, developing training for everyone, improving the quality of life at work and promoting labour relations. And we value the civic commitment of our employees.

Ensuring sustainable production and service quality

Sustainable development is integrated into the practices of our teams, who work 24/7 to maintain, modernise and develop the network. To cope with increasingly frequent and intense vagaries of the weather, our teams are working to guarantee the robustness of rail infrastructure.

To be exemplary in the way we conduct our business

We strictly control our contracts and purchases. We have a positive influence on our ecosystem of subcontracting partners by investing in more solidarity-based and environmentally-friendly purchasing.

Taking action for the environment in the regions

While rail is good for the planet and for regional cohesion, we need to make it greener by controlling the environmental impact of our activities even more effectively. In practical terms, this means contributing to the energy transition, developing the circular economy, protecting biodiversity and reducing noise pollution.

2022, the SNCF Group's first vigilance plan

Are you familiar with the “law on the duty of vigilance of parent companies and ordering party companies"? Behind this rather long name lies a law passed in 2017 that aims to put respect for human rights back at the heart of multinationals' concerns. In the wake of this law, in 2022 we published the SNCF Group's vigilance plan. Its objective is clear: we want to prevent serious violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the health and safety of individuals, and the environment, which could result from our activities or those of our subsidiaries and business partners.

When digital goes hand in hand with good practice

Digital responsibility has become a major issue for a healthy, secure and fair society. After analysing the digital context in which SNCF Réseau operates, we put in place best eco-digital practices within the company.
